GUANGXU PERIOD, DATED TO THE XINMAO YEAR AND CORRESPONDING TO 1891
Two of square section, the upper sections finely carved with two long-bodied dragons writhing amidst vaporous clouds, the third of rectangular section, the upper section with two writhing dragons amidst vaporous clouds, the stones of an even dark toffee tone

Lot Essay

One square-section seal is incised with a twelve-character inscription reading: Guangxu Xinmao ji chun, Boyu fang Qin yin.
This inscription maybe translated as ' In the spring of the Xinmao year of Guangxu (1891), Boyu imitating the style of Qin seals

The base carved with Wu wang ye ban, zhe yan tian shi

The other seal incised with a eleven-character inscription reading: 'Shu Weng jiang jun ming zuo, hou xue He Kunyu' which maybe translated as ' Ordered by General Shuweng, imitated by He Kunyu'.
The base carved with Ji Ge

The rectangular-section seal inscribed with a five-character inscription reading 'He Kunyu fang Han' which maybe translated as 'He Kunyu imitating the Han style'
The base carved with Shu Tang

He Kunyu (1828-1896), also named Boyu, is a zhuanshu calligrapher in the Qing dynasty who liked to copy Han and Qin calligraphy. He was also an important collector of paintings and calligraphy.
