The 'hundred boys' motif expresses the wish for progeny and numerous offspring, while the boys playing with lanterns and lighting firecrackers may suggest that the scene depicted is the Lantern Festival held on the 15th day of the lunar new year.

A very similar single bowl was sold in our Hong Kong Rooms, 26 April 2004, lot 1077.
