The four principal sides pierced with a pale aubergine bois simulé openwork trellis forming wan symbols within a green and yellow trellis-pattern and flower-head surround, each side with an overhanging triangular lappet decorated with butterflies and floral roundels on a seeded-green ground repeated on the canted short sides and on the flat top, a large circular aperture placed at one side of the top and another, smaller, to another side, all supported on an integral pale aubergine, bois simulé, eight-legged stand

This stand would probably have supported a standing figure or, alternatively, a famille verte Buddhist lion of considerable proportions. Two figures of ladies standing on similar stands are illustrated by John A. Pope, Porcelains in The Frick Collection, vol. III, New York, 1974, pp. 100-1, which were formerly in the Collection of J. Pierpont Morgan and exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1907.

Compare also the pair of Buddhist lions, once in the Collection of Winston Guest, which are also placed on similar stands; this pair was sold in these Rooms, 7 April 1997, lot 95. A related, slightly taller stand decorated in the famille rose palette was sold in our New York Rooms, 21-25 January 2010, lot 466.
