The slender ladies modelled holding candle-holders in the form of bamboo sections to their opposite sides, standing on rectangular flat bases beside a seated boy holding a square bois simulé candle-holder, the ladies wearing gilt-decorated iron-red robes with pink aprons, yellow collars and pale green skirts, all embellished with floral mofifs, the boys with similar iron-red jackets over yellow trousers

Lot Essay

Although numerous examples and variations of 'lady' candle-holders were made during the 18th Century in China, this particular model in which the ladies are combined with seated boys is very unusual.
