Lot Essay

During one of his numerous trips to India, the celebrated 17th Century French explorer, Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, Baron of Aubonne, described the diamonds he had observed as "pools of crystal water". Though this sounds slightly simplistic, it is indeed one of the better descriptions for the limpidity so characteristic in Golconda diamonds. The historic mines of Golconda are located in the lower portion of the Kistna River, in the current Indian state of Hyderabad. Though now exhausted, they produced some of the world's most lovely and important diamonds such as the Great Mughal and the Koh-i nur. The present diamond, demonstrating all of the traits typical of these superb diamonds, with its charming cushion-shape, is a rarity on the market. Gem connoisseurs will revel in the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Tavernier and observe the wonderful waters of Golconda.
