The following group of early European furniture and works of art is sold by a direct descendant of the connoisseur and pioneering dealer in Spanish Art, Lionel Harris (1862-1942). Harris had established his gallery specializing in Spanish painting and Renaissance works of art at 44 Conduit Street, London, and sold to a growing number of collectors and institutions around the world. His Spanish Art Gallery was mentioned in The Times as early as 1898, when Empress Frederick visited it, and in the early 1900s he sold numerous objects, including 16th Century alabaster effigies, ironwork objects, Gothic sculpture, Hispano-Moresque ceramics and Flemish tapestries to museums around the world, including the recently founded Hispanic Society of America in New York and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. In the 1920s Lionel Harris was joined by his son Maurice and several items in this group have descended to the present owner from Maurice Harris's personal collections.
