Lot Essay

These serpentine 'Gainsborough' chairs probably originally formed part of an extensive suite of seat-furniture, comprising both open armchairs, side chairs and a settee. Four further chairs which were probably executed in the same workshop - and which display the same distinctive sinuous seat-rail with central floral trail - were sold from the collection of Leopold Hirsch, Christie's London, 7 May 1934, lot 43.
