Lot Essay

Nicolas Petit, maître in 1761.

This commode is characteristic of Petit's oeuvre. The delicate proportions, breakfront drawers and distinctive swagged lion-mask corner mounts also feature on directly comparable commodes by Petit sold by the Trustees of Lord Hillingdon, Christie's, London, 29 June 1972, lot 79 and from The Wildenstein Collection, Christie's, London, 14-15 December 2005, lot 42.
