The sizes of the miniatures indicate that they were originally mounted on a rectangular Louis XV snuff-box. The oval miniature may have been mounted on the interior cover. The three main scenes are re-arranged part-copies after Bernard Lépicié's engraving Jeux d'enfants of 1731 which is an inversed copy of Charles-Antoine Coypel's painting of 1728, later in the collection of Madame de Pompadour and sold at Christie's, London, 9 July 1999, lot 50 (see exhibition catalogue Madame de Pompadour et les arts, Versailles, Château, 2002, no. 55).
