Jan Smout became a master in Utrecht in 1650 and is known to have produced the mounts for Chinese and Japanese porcelain. See for example a Japanese ewer with very similar mounts to the present example, hallmarked for 1681 (exhibited Utrecht, Centraal Museum Utrecht, Zilver, no. 35).
