Lot Essay

This lovely brooch exemplifies two salient characteristics of 1950s jewellery: the penchant for diamonds and the tendency towards Naturalism. As a result of their scarcity during the war years, diamonds came into full fashion in the decade after the conflict. Their incorporation into this simple, yet elegant, brooch depicting a laurel leaf is a tribute to the superb craftsmanship of Tiffany & Co.. The thin wires are also typical of the period. It is mounted in palladium platinum as iridium was still scarce due to the wartime consumption.
