Georges Jacob, maître in 1765.
The elegant lines, quality of the decoration and idiosyncratic foliate-wrapped inscrolled leg point to the oeuvre of Georges Jacob, the most celebrated and one of the most prolific menuisiers of his time. This distinctive leg was employed on a number of versions executed by the celebrated menuisier for the Royal Court. Among such, a chaise by Jacob at the Château de Fontainebleau (ill. in M. Jarry, La Siège Français, Paris, 1973, p. 175) and a suite of seat furniture jointly executed by Jacob and Jean-Baptiste Sené, formerly in the salle à manger of Madame Elisabeth at the Château de Montreuil (and sold Tajan, Paris, 5 December 1989, lot 95 (FF1,100,000) and again sold (in part), Sothbey's, London, 6 July 2010, lot 44 (£ 181,250). The fauteuil de toilette executed circa 1770 probably for the Comtesse Du Barry at the Petit Trianon, which also bears the brand of Marie-Antoinette's Garde-Meuble and the painted mark of the Trianon also ranks among Jacob's related Royal commissions (ill. in P. Arizzoli-Clémentel, Versailles, Furniture of the Royal Palace, 17th and 18th Centuries, Dijon, 2002, pp.228-9, no. 80).
Further related examples by Jacob are illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Les Ebénistes Français du XVIIIè Siècle, Paris, 2002, pp. 452 and 455. Among the examples by or attributed to the celebrated menuisier, which were sold at auction, a virtually identical pair was sold at Sotheby's, New York, 20 November 1993, lot 271 ($54,625) while a fauteuil bearing the marque au fer 'M.D.' was sold at Tajan, Paris, 18 December 2001, lot 148 (EUR 32,000).
