Lot Essay

Wilhelm Bröcking (1834-1897) was the co-owner of W. u. W. G. Bröcking, Hamburg. Although a Hamburg clock and chronometer maker he served his apprenticeship under Malmsjo in Gotenburg, Sweden and Henry Delolme, London.
The design of this case is very typical of regulators from Altona, Hamburg and based on Johann Heinrich Kessels' design. It was also used by highly regarded makers such as Theodore Knoblich and F. Denker. K. Erbrich, Präzisionpendeluhren, Munich, 1978, pp.158-159, illustrates a similarly designed regulator by Knoblich (No. 1808) and Derek Roberts, Precision Pendulum Clocks: France, Germany, America and Recent Advancements, Atglen, 2004, pp. 192-193, illustrates a further model by Denker (No. 26).
