Nicolas Petit, maître in 1761.
Of elegant proportions, this commode is characteristic of Petit's oeuvre. The sans traverse ribbon-tied musical trophies flanking a fluted plinth and swagged lion-mask corner mounts are familiar features of other commodes stamped by Petit. A very closely related example, with subtle differences but similarly proportioned and with an identical marquetry scheme, was sold by the Trustees of Lord Hillingdon, Christie's, London, 29 June 1972, lot 79. Another closely related but slightly smaller commode was sold 'The Wildenstein Collection', Christie's, London, 14-15 December 2005, lot 42.
