Lot Essay

This condiment-set is inspired by the famous French Régence surtout-de-table made by Lille silversmith Elie Pacot, 1709-1710 (N. Cartier, Les Orfèvres de Lille, vol. 2, pl. XIX). The surtout, which consisted of a large centerpiece, octagonal, hexagonal, rectangular and triangular jardinieres, probably originally belonged to the Duke of Marlborough, was purchased by Garrard from a sale at Christie's 9-10 April, 1829. The pattern was most famously used for a series of entrée dishes made through the 19th century (Christie's, New York, 23 October 2008, lot 132).
