NEVILLE CARDUS
['Jack Hobbs and Maurice Tate']. 10p. working manuscript in blue biro, headed 'By Neville Cardus', [1969]. 4to. Green buckram for John Arlott, spine titled in gilt. Provenance: John Arlott (binding) -- Tony Winder (bookplate; purchased from Arlott in 1979; Phillips sale, 21 November 1985, lot 463).
A typically brilliant piece of anecdotal writing by Cardus, probably for publication in the Manchester Guardian, treating Hobbs as 'sovereign ... the bridge over which batsmanship moved from the Grace era to modern times', and Tate as another figure who 'went through a great transition ... supremely placed among bowlers of his type, it is more or less forgotten that he was a dangerous batsman, good enough to open the Sussex innings'.
