HABLOT KNIGHT BROWNE ('PHIZ'), illustrator

[Hunting Bits.] How Pippins enjoyed a day with the Fox Hounds. London: Messrs Fores, [1863]. Oblong folio (328 x 470mm), lithographic title with vignette cut-down and mounted, 12 coloured lithographic plates by 'Phiz', printed by M. & N. Hanhart. (Occasional light, mostly marginal, spotting.) Contemporary calf, lettered in gilt to upper cover, gilt turn-ins (extremities rubbed, spine worn, head- and tail caps defective). Schwerdt I, 83, identifying plates 1, 5, 7, 10 and 11 as proofs.

With: G.D. ARMOUR. Humour in the Hunting Field. London: Country Life, 1928. Large 4to (435 x 348mm), half-title, 20 coloured plates with printed overlays, text-illustrations (first overlay lightly creased), original half cloth, uncut (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: possibly A. Mitchell (his sale Christie's 2 July 1947, lot 37; bought by Pickering and Chatto for £3; pencil price of £4/4/- to front pastedown). Out-of-series issue without the pencil signatures to plates. (2)
