DAVIS CUP, 1924
A white-metal presentation set of pen-knife, propelling pencil and fountain pen, all stamped 'Sterling', the pen made by F. Edward Todd, New York, fitting into a hard-grained black morocco case with plush interior, the inner lid with retailer's name, 'Black Starr and Frost', New York', the outer lid lettered in gilt 'A.W.M. from the U.S.L.T.A. Davis Cup Dinner 29 August, 1924', 105 x 62mm. (exterior a little rubbed).
The dinner fell between two groups of matches, those between Australia and Japan at Providence, Rhode Island, 14-16 August, and those between Australia and France at Boston, 4-6 September. 'A.W.M.' is almost certainly Arthur Wallis Myers (1878-1939), one of the most important figures in the early history of the Davis Cup in Great Britain, editor of Ayres' Annuals, and author of several iconic books on lawn tennis, a worthy recipient of such an elegant gift.
