The Biographical Dictionary of Sculptors in Britain 1660-1851, Ingrid Roscoe, Emma Hardy and M G Sullivan, The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, 2009 lists three sculptors called Gowan from the same family working in Edinburgh in the late 18th century and 19th century.
