QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
Of rounded circular form supported on a short foot, the top carved in relief with a scene depicting groups of scholars on the shores of a lake viewing a scroll and in conversation before pavilions in a tree-lined mountainous landscape, against diapers representing air, water and land all within bands of keyfret and ruyi motifs, the carved with eight raised cartouches, four each to the box and cover, each containing the San duo, 'Three Abundances' comprising peach, pomegranate and finger citron, surrounded by the wu fu and separated by the bajixiang, Eight Buddhist Emblems, all reserved against a floral diaper ground, the rims and foot carved with keyfret, the base and interiors lacquered black

A slightly smaller lacquer box (35 cm. diam.) decorated with a very similar scene and decorative borders in the Palace Museum, Beijing is illustrated in Lacquer Wares of the Qing Dynasty, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 2006, no. 37.
