Of oval cross-section, the exterior of the cover finely and deeply carved with an elaborate network of ropes, twisted through six bi-discs radiating from a main disc at the centre, reserving ruyi clouds and stylised bats against a diaper-ground, the pattern is repeated on the exterior of the box, the interiors with black lacquer

The complex design of rope-twists appears to be an innovative decorative motif typical of the mid-Qing period. Compare with a circular box in the Beijing Palace Museum Collection, illustrated by Chen Lihua (ed.), Carved Lacquerware, Forbidden City Publishing House, 2008, p. 256, no. 175 (see fig. 1).
