A FINELY ENAMELLED IMPERIAL 'EUROPEAN SUBJECT' SNUFF BOTTLE
GUANGZHOU WORKSHOPS, QIANLONG FOUR-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795)
Of compressed pear-shape, finely enamelled on each side with a foliate panel, one side with a European scene of a mother seated at a table with her child, the reverse with a similar scene depicting two ladies in conversation, all framed by draped curtains within a border of interlocking foliate scroll, all on a stippled light green ground with scattered bats in flight among ruyi clouds, the shoulder with a pendent lappet border

Lot Essay

The unusual form of this bottle relates best to the group of enamelled snuff bottles in the form of pouches such as the example in the Palace Museum, Beijing illustrated in Snuff Bottles, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, no. 47, Hong Kong, 2003, no. 137.

Compare the painting on the present bottle with a snuff bottle in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Snuff Bottles in the Collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1991, pl. 9 which is also enamelled with European figures within a decorative border very similar to that found on the present example.
