The present cupstand appears to be unique, although it compares well to related examples in silver and gold of the Tang dynasty. Cf. stoneware inkstones dating to the Sui/Tang period which incorporate stylistically similar decorative bands such as the example illustrated by H. Moss and G. Tsang, Arts from the Scholar's Studio, Hong Kong, 1986, no. 190.
Compare with several other Tang dynasty white marble pieces excavated from a tomb in Xingyuan village, Yanshi, Henan province, including a quatrefoil footed cup, a shallow quatrefoil dish and a quatrefoil box, illustrated in Kaogu, 1984, no. 10, pls. 8:2 and 7:6, the line drawings are on p. 911, figs. 9:1 and 6 and p. 912, fig. 10:4.
