REPUBLIC PERIOD, LIU XIREN SIGNED GUIYOU CYCLICAL YEAR, CORRESPONDING TO 1933 AND OF THE PERIOD
The plaque of rectangular form, painted with enamels of soft pastel shades to depict a monk dressed in a yellow robe with one hand pointing up at the full moon, as if engaged in animated conversation with his two companion scholars, all seated on a sampan moored beside a grassy embankment detailed with willow trees, inscribed on one side with a title, Chibi Yeyou, 'Travelling along the Red Cliff at Night', signed and dated by the artist
6 1/8 in. (41 cm.) overall height, mounted as a table screen

Lot Essay

Liu Xiren (1906-1967) and his brother Liu Xiyu were already known names as ceramic artists in the Nanchang area in the 1930s.
