Lot Essay

A number of designs for salt-cellars were produced by Garrard in the mid-19th Century with figures in Irish, Hungarian, Persian, Spanish and French dress. The designs, which are recorded in the Garrard II Pattern Book were not exclusively used by the firm and similar salts were produced by other leading silversmiths including John S. Hunt (see Christie's London, 3 May 1995, lot 28 for a pair by Hunt 1856). Garrard retailed these salt-cellars for ¨20 each. A group of similar salt-cellars were exhibited London, Garrard, Royal Goldsmiths, The Garrard Heritage 1991, no. 42
