VAN BUREN, Martin. Letter signed ("M. Van Buren"), AS PRESIDENT, to Messrs. B. Bates, Charles F. Lineback, Henry C. Sperry and William Fromint, Washington, 9 March 1840. 1 page, 4to.

"STIRRING RECOLLECTIONS OF TRIAL AND TRIUMPHS IN THE DEMOCRATIC CAUSE"

Van Buren--gearing up for a tough reelection fight during a recession--thanks a committee of New York Democrats for their endorsement. He tells the Democratic Republican Citizens of New York of his "grateful feelings" as "a publick servant who honestly endeavours to do his duty" to "receive assurances of the approbation and confidence of his fellow citizens." Their praise is particularly welcome coming from New York, "in the name of the Republicans of a city which has long striven with admirable constancy and efficiency in the political contests of our country, and with which are associated so many stirring recollections of trial, and triumphs, in the Democratic cause." In November, Van Buren failed to keep New York from voting Whig, and suffered an electoral thrashing at the hands of William Henry Harrison.
