Contemporary red morocco, covers with dark blue morocco onlaid corners and 5 central onlays, all-over gilt tooling comprised of floral volutes, tulips and other flowers, leaves, spangles, sun tool, etc., spine in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands, gilt-lettered in one compartment, a repeated panel gilt-tooled with volutes and leaves, three panels with dark blue morocco onlay, gilt edges concealing a CONTEMPORARY FORE-EDGE PAINTING OF A FLORAL DESIGN, in the style of seventeenth-century painting (corners lightly worn, joints expertly repaired). Provenance: Estelle Doheny (bookplate; her sale Christie's New York, 17 October 1988, lot 1288).
