[EDWARDS OF HALIFAX, bindery]. -- CHAPONE, Hester. Letters on the Improvement of the Mind, Addressed to a Young Lady. London: for J. Walter, and E. and C. Dilly, 1777.
Small 8o (158 x 93 mm). (Some light browning.) Contemporary vellum, covers with a gilt pentaglyph and metope border on a blue wash background, smooth spine gilt-lettered on a blue wash background and divided into 6 compartments by blue wash bands, alternating gilt urn and gilt lyre in the compartments, edges gilt concealing a fore-edge painting of HEMSLEY CASTLE (upper cover lightly soiled, some vellum lost by the binder on the lower board edge, some loss of the blue on spine); contemporary green morocco slipcase; modern quarter leater folding case. Provenance: Hannah Hardy (signature in ink on title page); Estelle Doheny (bookplate; her sale Christie's, 1 February 1988, lot 611).
