8o (183 x 115 mm). Engraved frontispiece, 5 engraved plates (spotting throughout). Contemporary vellum, covers with gilt pentaglyph and metope roll border on a blue wash background enclosing a gilt vine-leaf border, gilt Bacchanalian goat mask upper cornerpieces and Sphinx lower cornerpieces, upper cover with a gilt centerpiece on a blue wash background with initials "S.S.," lower cover with drawing under the vellum showing a ruined abbey (oval: 110x80mm), gilt edges concealing a fore-edge painting of A COUNTRY MANSION (minor loss to blue wash). Provenance: Estelle Doheny (bookplate; her sale Christie's New York, 17 October 1988, lot 1317).

Thomson's The Seasons seems to be a popularly painted work; Carl Weber mentions examining at least 5 copies, including one with a different scene by Edwards of Halifax.
