Contemporary red straight-grained morocco, covers with gilt fillet and ornamental borders, spine in 5 compartments with 4 raised bands gilt-lettered in 2 compartments with ornamental tooling in the others, edges gilt concealing fore-edge paintings of DOVER CASTLE AND HARBOR; AMSTERDAM; THE GARDENS OF THE TUILERIES; THE CASTLE OF ST. ANGELO, ROME; THE CASTLE OF HEIDELBERG and A CHATEAU OF CHILLON (some light rubbing to head and foot of spine); modern cloth slipcase. Hugh Walpole, a best-selling author in the 1920s and 1930s, resided at Brackenburn, which was located on the slopes of the Catbells overlooking Derwentwater in the Lake District. He was a noted collector; he was granted a knighthood in 1937.
