Green crushed levant morocco gilt, covers with double gilt-ruled border, large "picture frame" central panel with elaborate roll-tooled border, spine in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands, gilt-lettered in one, repeated ornament in the rest, turn-ins and board-edges gilt, by Chatelin edges gilt concealing a fore-edge painting of LOWTHER CASTLE, WESTMORELAND (lightly scuffed to upper and lower cover and raised bands on spine); modern red morocco gilt slipcase by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. Provenance: Estelle Doheny (bookplate; her sale Christie's Camarillo California, 2 February 1988, lot 682).
