CUVIER, Georges Léopold, Baron de (1769-1832). The Animal Kingdom ... with additional descriptions of all the species hitherto named, and of many not before noticed by Edward Griffith. London: G.B. Whittaker, 1827-35.
16 volumes (including the index), 8o (245 x 157 mm). Approximately 800 engraved plates, ca. 600 hand-colored, some heightened with gum arabic, 12 of the plain plates folding, printed folding table in volume XI. (Occasional pale spotting and offsetting.) 19th-century red half morocco (some light rubbing to joints).
FIRST ENGLISH EDITION of this classic work by the great naturalist Baron Cuvier. Various sources and sale records cite different plate counts, making a definitive collation of this edition impossible. This is the most important translation of Cuvier's work, not only for incorporating his own discourse on avian anatomy, but also for the addition of many species not covered in previous editions. Anker 110; Brunet II:457; Freeman 892; Nissen ZBI 1015; Zimmer pp.153-55. (16)
