4 volumes, 4o (284 x 220 mm). 100 handcolored lithographic plates by and after J. Smit and J. Wolf, printed by M. & N. Hanhart. Title vignettes and illustrations. Contemporary burgundy half morocco gilt by H.M. Porter, gilt-lettered spine compartments, top edges gilt, others uncut (minor rubbing to spine ends). Provenance: John M. Geddes (signature dated 1925).
FIRST EDITION, A FINE COPY OF THIS BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED WORK. The plates were prepared under the supervision of Sir Victor Alexander Brooke who died in 1891 without having completed the text. Sclater therefore wrote a new text in partnership with Oldfield Thomas who provided the synonymy and scientific descriptions. BM(NH) IV, p.1883; Mendelssohn II, p. 292; Nissen ZBI 3784; Wood p.558: "fine illustrations." (4)
