AN ATTIC RED-FIGURED COLUMN-KRATER
ATTRIBUTED TO THE PAINTER OF THE LOUVRE CENTAUROMACHY, CIRCA 460 B.C.
The obverse with a procession of maenads and satyrs moving to the right, the maenads each draped in a peplos pinned at the shoulders, the satyrs each nude with a wreath in added white over his bald pate, with long untamed beard and hair, equine ears and tail, that to the right with his right arm akimbo, his left bent across his body, looking back at the maenad behind him, a thyrsos in her left hand, wearing a sakkos in her hair, looking back at the satyr reaching toward her from behind, the maenad to the far left with a kantharos held by its foot in her raised left hand, her head tilted back; the reverse with three draped youths, one with a staff, jumping weights above; both scenes framed on either side by double rows of ivy, tongues above; lotus bud chain on the neck of the obverse; black silhouette boars and lions on the rim, a graffito on the underside of the foot
