The bearded hero standing in controposto on the original socle with his weight on his right leg, the left bent at the knee and pulled back, bearing some weight on his toes, the heel raised, leaning on his knobby club held in his right hand, the Nemean lionskin draped over his bent left arm, holding the three apples of the Hesperides in his hand, the pose of the muscular torso emphasizing the well-defined back and buttocks, his head turned to his left, his gaze angled downward, depicted with thick curly hair and a full beard and mustache

Lot Essay

This bronze is loosely based on a Greek original of the mid 5th century B.C. For the pose compare the small marble statue, no. 525 in Boardman, "Herakles" in LIMC.
