Lot Essay

Tanit was the Phoenician mother goddess, forming a divine couple with her companion Baal Hammon. Her characteristics relate to those assigned to the goddess Astarte, and there are some inscriptions that amalgamate the two into Tanit-Astarte. For more on Phoenician religion and the goddess Tanit see p. 113ff. in Moscati, The Phoenicians.
