Red initials and border decorations with extensive flourishing in red, headings and responses in red, 23 lines in a 17th-century Greek cursive bookhand (verso of final leaf in a different hand), colophon on final leaf dated June 1636 by the hieromonk, archbishop and archimandrite Auxentios [of Karpathos], deckle edges (light soiling, occasional wormholes, a few edges slightly frayed, quires strengthened at hinge). Modern boards (light stains on upper cover). Provenance: J.P.R. Lyell (1871-1948, bookplate).
Nikolaos Malaxos was a 16th-century hymnographer and editor of hymnographical texts. The present manuscript contains a series of hymns addressed to the Virgin Mary and formed part of the library of the renowned book collector and bibliographer James Patrick Ronaldson Lyell.
