FIRST EDITION. Born in Ireland and educated in America, Dobell ultimately settled on Russian citizenship. Dobell identified the Philippines as a key base from which to organize the regular supply of provisions to the Russian Far East and suggested the idea to the Russian government, sending at his own cost three ships from Manila to Kamchatka. Alexander I approved the plan and appointed Dobell Consul General of Russia's first mission in Manila. Dobell made three trips to China, where he lived for seven years. This work is based in part on his Travels in Kamtchatka and Siberia, published in London in 1830, but adds seven chapters and appendices. A French translation was published in 1838. Cordier 2109.
