Second edition. Belli was born in Vincenza and practised as architect at Rome and Ferrara, befriending Palladio, who was a co-founder with Belli of Vicenza's Accademia Olimpica. He was also a skilled mathematician and engineer, and wrote two works on the application of geometry to architectural problems: Libro del misurar con la vista and Della proportione, et proportionalitä communi passioni del quanto (Venice: 1573). The former work was first published in Venice by Domenico Nicolini da Sabbio in 1565. Ziletti's edition appeared the following year, followed by a further Ziletti edition in 1569-1570, before both titles were issued together as Quattro libri geometrici in 1595. Referring to this edition, Cicognara wrote: "Le opere di Silvio Belli sono pregiatissime per la scienza, e chiarezza delle esposizione." Adams B-519; Riccardi I(1) 107, no. 1, 2; see Cicognara 427.
