FIRST EDITION of this important work on 18th-century dance notation by this noted dancing-master who studied under Feuillet. "Apparently not ever in general use, even during the years immediately following Feuillet's publication in 1700 of the notational system... dance notation had in the second half of the 18th century not a few detractors (such as Noverre...), but also advocates such as Magny... In his preface, Magny claims to have developed, extended, put in order, proved, and augmented Feuillet's principles... He explains the principes of the system... then provides a series of tables with the steps in chorégraphie... Added is a section on cadence... with signs for the pas de menuet used to illustrate coordination with the music. Further information on the menuet is found at the end of the book... Magny appends dances in chorégraphie with music... Then follows a section on the contredanse and the use of chorégraphie in recording it..." Schwartz & Schlundt, pp. 47-48.
