FIRST EDITION of Playfair's final work, with fine examples of the graphical method of statistical representation which he had introduced to the economic field in his Commercial and Political Atlas (1786). These charts represent the price of wheat in relation to weekly wages of a "good" mechanic. "Here Playfair plotted three parallel time-series: prices, wages, and the reigns of British kings and Queens"--Tufte, The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, p. 34 (illustrated).
