Lot Essay

As noted by Maggiori, the present drawing is related to the head of Saint Francis, frescoed in the Cappella Paolina (also known as the Cappella Borghese) in S. Maria Maggiore, Rome, as part of Reni's series The Miracles and Triumphs of the Virgin (1611-12; see D.S. Pepper, Guido Reni: A complete catalogue of his works with an introductory text, Oxford, 1984, fig. 56).
