Lot Essay

After studying with Pietro da Cortona, Giovanni Maria Bottalla embarked on a career which took him to Rome, Naples and back to Genoa. While in Rome, he enjoyed the patronage of Cardinal Giulio Sacchetti, one of two brothers who were also patrons of Pietro da Cortona and who moved in the leading intellectual circle in Rome. The attribution of the present drawing to Bottalla was proposed by Mary Newcome on the occasion of the 1988 sale.
