In 1871 Callow and his wife set out on a sketching tour of Germany staying firstly in Bonn, where they attended the Beethoven Festival, and then moving on to Limburg, Runkel, Wilburg, Giessen, Marburg and other towns in the valley of the Lahn. During the tour Callow recorded the sights he saw in pencil. The study for the present watercolour is at Tate Britain (A00139).
