Lot Essay

Samuel Jackson became a leading figure in the Bristol School of Painting, and developed a highly sophisticated technique with much sponging, stopping and scratching out, and glazing with a layer of thin bodycolour. The majority of his landscapes are views in the British Isles, particularly those in Devon and Wales. Jackson visited Lynmouth in 1826.

For another watercolour by Jackson see lot 1213.
