Lot Essay

Throughout his career John Varley's work was often based on scenes in Wales, the North, Killarney and the Thames. The current watercolour was painted in 1835, shortly before Varley turned away from the topographical landscapes at which he was so adept, to concentrate almost exclusively on paintings that were more abstract and experimental.
