A CHINESE-EXPORT CARVED IVORY BUST TYPE CHESS SET
PROBABLY CANTON, CIRCA 1870
The kings and queens in royal headresses, the bishops carved with mitres on the European side, the knights as horses with truncated legs, the rooks as turrets profusely carved with prunus blossom and the pawns as infantry men, all on foliate knopped stems and stiff-leaf bases
The king -- 3 in. (7.5 cm.) high; the pawn -- 2¼ in. (5.7 cm.) high
Together with thirty-two Chinese-Export ivory low-relief carved draughts counters and two shakers, fitted within a later associated box
