Lot Essay

These type of sets, made of tin glazed earthenware also know as the Saint George pattern, were assoicated with examples from Rouen, which date from the late 18th and early 19th century and made specifically for export to England. See George Dean, Chess Masterpieces, Abrams, New York, page 117.
