Maserati began building racing cars in Modena in the 1920's and for the next thirty years or so the company built elegant, exquisitely crafted single seaters for sale to wealthy amateur and independent professional drivers. The Maserati 250F six-cylinder Grand Prix car used to such great effect by Juan Manuel Fangio in the mid-1950's, represents to many enthusiasts the very height of Historic singleseater design.
In parallel with the racing cars, Maserati produced road-going cars in small numbers, moving into the luxury Gran Turismo market in 1958 with the six-cylinder 3500GT. In 1962 its successor arrived in the shape of the Sebring, slightly shorter in wheelbase, designed to provide luxurious and controllable, very high speed (up to 135mph), long distance motoring for two, occasionally four people. Fitted with the latest examples of the Italian coachbuilder's art, by Vignale in particular, the Sebring, named in honour of Maserati's great win in the 1957 Sebring 12-hours race in Florida, was a GT car of considerable merit which impressed the motor journal road-testers of the time. Production ended after about 550 examples had been made.
This particular car is fitted with an outstandingly elegant example of Vignale's best early work. The Northern Italian coachbuilding houses preferred to work in steel, and in this case Vignale combined that metal with aluminium for bonnet and boot panels. On this particular car the simple treatment of the front intake grille with its understated Maserati Trident symbol sits easily with the often visually awkward quadruple headlamp treatment and the tastefully restrained detailing is set off by the simplicity of the Borrani disc wheels.
Offered at No Reserve.
