1960 BENTLEY S2
Chassis No. B119 1BR
Grey metallic with red leather interior trim.
Engine: vee-eight, 90° overhead valves operated by pushrod, rockers and self-adjusting hydraulic tappets, twin SUHD6 carburettors, 6,230cc; Gearbox: four speed automatic; Steering: cam and roller with hydraulic power assistance; Suspension: front independent with unequal length wishbones, piston hydraulic dampers, rear semi-elliptic with electrically controlled piston-type dampers; Brakes: drums all round with hydraulic operation to the front and mechanical servo assistance to the rear. Left-hand drive.
The six cylinder engine had been the stalwart of Rolls-Royce and Bentley motor power for decades. The Ghost, Phantom I and II, the 20, 20/25, 25/30, Wraith, MKVI Bentley and Silver Cloud I, and its Bentley equivalent the SI, all had straight six engines either with overhead valves or an L-head. The exceptions had been the vee-twelve Phantom III and the straight eight of the Phantom IV. Rolls-Royce had a history of developing their engines and chassis out of step. For example the New Phantom (later the Phantom I) had a new engine planted in a chassis which was still essentially Ghost. When the Silver Cloud and SI cars were introduced they were virtually new in concept - except that they had the six cylinder engine inherited from their predecessors. That, however, Rolls-Royce decreed, was the limit. The Cloud II and SII were to have a new engine because no further development could be squeezed from the straight six.
This new engine was a vee eight of 6,230cc with aluminium cylinder blocks and hydraulically operated valve tappets to compensate for the greater expansion and contraction range of the alumiuium blocks. This basic concept has served Rolls-Royce from then till the present day.
This S2 is a good, sound original car. Its grey metallic paint finish is very good as is the original red leather seat trim. When new it was sold in France to a banker and the vendor bought it in 1975 from this first owner. It has air-conditioning and a radio, is in regular use and will be driven to the sale. It has French registration documents.
